Chennai police arrest TV actor VJ Chitra's husband for abetment to suicide

Synopsis

TV actor VJ Chitra's husband Hemanth was booked under Section 306 of IPC by Nazarathpet Police after his questioning.

Chitra, who was known for her role as Mullai on the television series Pandian Stores, was found dead at a hotel in the outskirts of Chennai, on December 9.

Chitra's husband Hemanth was booked under Section 306 of IPC by Nazarathpet Police after his questioning.

In his statement, Hemanth claimed that he was waiting outside the hotel room, as Chitra was going to take a shower. When he realised that she did not open the door for a long time, he got the hotel staff to open it. It was then that he found Chitra's body.

NDTV quoted Assistant Commissioner of Police Sudarshan as saying, "Hemanth did not like a scene she had enacted on TV. On the day she died, he had also pushed her."

Chitra's family had earlier accused Hemanth of domestic violence.

Chitra's mother Vijaya had claimed before media persons that he daughter was beaten to death.

"She spoke to me on Tuesday saying she was on a show and that it would be late. In the morning, her father-in-law called sharing the news. How could it be," she asked.

Chitra got engaged to the Chennai-based businessman in August this year. They registered their marriage. A ceremony with guests was scheduled for February 2021.
