Captain Amarinder: Congress going downhill,  senior leaders sidelined

Synopsis

Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said that the Congress was going downhill with senior leaders being completely ignored and not given a voice.

Captain Amarinder Singh has confirmed that he is resigning from the Congress but reiterated that he will not be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. 

However, in a statement released by his office, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said that the Congress was going downhill with senior leaders being completely ignored and not given a voice.

Captain Amarinder said the Congress had been utterly humiliated and was not trusted. 

The former Punjab chief minister said that he was still mulling over the options before him keeping in mind the interest of Punjab. 

He reiterated that the state's security was the predominant priority for him. 

Asserting that he will not tolerate humiliation, Captain Amarinder said that his principles and beliefs do not allow him to stay in Congress. 

Captain Amarinder said that senior Congress leaders, who were critical to the future of the party, were being completely sidelined.

He added that the younger leadership should be promoted to implement the plans. 

With regard to the assembly elections due in the state next year and giving an indication that he may even float his own outfit, Captain Amarinder hoped that the state would vote for the future of the state and that people of the state would vote for a single party/force, irrespective of the number of parties in the fray. 

Speaking about his interaction with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Thursday, Captain Amarinder said that misgovernance in Punjab would give Pakistan the opportunity to create trouble in the state and in the country. 

Captain Amarinder had raised the issue during his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah besides speaking about farmers’ issues. 

Captain Amarinder said that those who undermine the growing Pakistan threat in Punjab were playing into the hands of anti-India forces.
