CAA protests: Two protesters succumb to injuries in Karnataka's Mangaluru

Two protesters who staged demonstrations against Citizenship Act succumbed to their injuries after police fired at them in Mangaluru, Karnataka, on December 19

Mangaluru: Thousands across the country have hit the streets in protest against the Citizenship Act. While the entire country is burning, protests in Mangaluru, Karnataka, turned violent with protesters attacking the police and the police shelling tear gas, lathi-charging them.

The protesters pelted stones at the cops and in turn the Mangaluru Police reportedly fired at the protestors as it turned too violent.    

The two protesters who were injured in the firing were rushed to the hospital but both of them succumbed to their injuries.

In Bengaluru, historian Ramachandra Guha and over 200 people were detained by the police but this did not deter protesters from marching to the city’s Town Hall.

There were demonstrations across the country as well. Police baton-charged protestors in Ahmedabad. Several demonstrators, most of them university students, were detained in Hyderabad on their way to Exhibition Grounds, where a demonstration was planned. Rail and road services were disrupted in Bihar during a bandh called by Left parties.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa called for peace amidst CAA protests in various parts of the state and warned the police not to take law into their hands.  

He also claimed that opposition parties and leaders who are opposing the Act are doing it with a political motive and people of the country are intelligent to understand their motto. “Citizenship Amendment Act is a national Act. CAA is a constitutional provision, there is no question of states rejecting it. As a member of the federal set up, every state is bound by the Constitution,” he added.
