Karnataka Legislative Council polls today; First election in the state amid pandemic

The Legislative Council elections are underway in Karnataka on Wednesday for four seats. This will be the first election taking place in the state amid the pandemic.

Bengaluru: The polling for the biennial Legislative Council elections in Karnataka is underway on Wednesday.

Through the Legislative Council polls the state and the capital are witnessing its first election amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The polls are being conducted to elect representatives of four seats, the Karnataka Southeast Graduates, Karnataka West Graduates, Karnataka Northeast Teachers and Bangalore Teachers constituencies, in the 75-member Council.

A total of 40 candidates are in line for the polls, which had to take place before June 30, but were delayed because of the pandemic situation.

While 2,34,718 voters will cast their votes today, arrangements have been made at 549 polling stations.

Meanwhile, the counting of votes is scheduled to take place on November 2, a day before the byelections to RR Nagar and Sira assembly constituencies.

Earlier Bengaluru city police had announced that liquor stores will be closed from 6pm on Monday to 6pm Wednesday.

The district administration has banned supply and sale of liquor in the entire district, including the suburban areas, 48 hours prior to the closing of the polls.
