West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (December 22) announced a direct bank transfer of Rs 10,000 to the account of each of 9.5 lakh Class XII students studying in government schools to procure tab or smartphone for online education.

Mamata Banerjee had earlier announced that her government will give tabs to students so that they have no problem in attending online classes. But due to shortage of supply of tabs in the market, the government decided to transfer Rs 10,000 to each of the student’s bank account so that they can buy the tabs from their respective areas.

Most of the students in rural Bengal either have one handset in the family or the gadget is not compatible to attend online classes. Therefore, the government decided to provide tabs to the students will be beneficial to the students for attending online classes.
An official pointed out that a tab costs between Rs 10,000 and Rs 13,000 while a smartphone can easily be bought at a lesser price.

The Chief Minister on Monday (December 21) felicitated toppers of Madhyamik, Higher Secondary, ICSE, ISC, CBSE and WBJEE at Netaji Indoor Stadium. All the 248 students received books, laptops, wristwatches and sweets. Moreover, she went to each of them, spoke to them and also gave her autograph.
