Synopsis

Five terrorists were killed during an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Thursday. Two jawans were also wounded during the encounter, and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Five terrorists were killed, and two soldiers injured after an encounter erupted between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district on Thursday morning, officials said. Security personnel began a cordon and search operation on Wednesday night shortly after receiving intelligence reports regarding the presence of suspected terrorists in Kadder in the district's Behibagh neighbourhood. However, after militants fired at the security officers, who replied, the situation devolved into a gunfight.

In a post on X, the Army's Chinar Corps said, “On 19 December 24, based on specific intelligence input regarding the presence of terrorists, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army & Jammu and Kashmir Police at Kader, Kulgam. Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops, and on being challenged, terrorists opened indiscriminate and heavy volume of fire. Our own troops effectively retaliated."

A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist was killed in an encounter in the Dachigram region of Jammu and Kashmir earlier this month. The targeted murders of people in Gagangir, Ganderbal, and other locations were carried out by the terrorist Junaid Ahmed Bhat.

According to sources who spoke to India Today TV, the Union Home Ministry ordered last month that a special task force of the National Security Guard (NSG), the nation's counterterrorism organisation, be stationed in Jammu in response to recent terrorist assaults in the area. The Jammu area has seen a dramatic increase in terror attacks this year, affecting eight of its ten districts. 44 people have died as a result of these occurrences, including 13 terrorists, 14 civilians, and 18 security officers.
