Assam: India's longest river ropeway connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati inaugurated

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only 15 people will be allowed to travel in the ropeway cabins at a time  

Guwahati: Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and development department minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya inaugurated the longest river ropeway of the country connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati. The 1.8- kilometre long ropeway operates from Kachari Ghat in Guwahati to Dol Govinda temple in North Guwahati.

According to reports, the ropeway has been built as per state-of -the-art technology following relevant norms. The opening of ropeway service would reduce the travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati as well as boost the tourism sector.

With the ropeway, the distance can be covered in 8-9 minutes. There are two cabins, and each can carry 32 passengers at a time. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, only 15 people will be allowed for the time being. The one-way ride will cost one Rs 60 while the fare for a two-way commute will be Rs 100. The project, which entailed a cost of Rs 56.8 crore, was constructed using Swiss technology.

According to reports, the ambitious project was initiated in 2006 by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authorities as part of beautifying the Brahmaputra riverfront.

A major portion of work was reportedly completed in 2019.
