A day after Karnataka government surges power tariff, BWSSB hikes water tariff by 12%

The BWSSB has proposed to increase water tariff by 12% after the Karnataka government announced a hike in power tariff by 40 paise per unit with an average increase of 5.4 percent.

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has planned to increase the water tariff by 12%.

The proposal has come just a day after the Karnataka government announced a hike power tariff by 40 paise per unit with an average increase of 5.4 percent.

The BWSSB is apparently seeking a revision of tariff for the last six years and the government may finally give a nod this year.

The increase in the tariff will be approved only if the BWSSB’s expenses are more than its income.

Earlier the BWSSB’’s proposal for a 35% hike was declined by the state government. The BWSSB had stated that more than 30 crore rupees is spent on the maintenance of water supply and sewage networks every month.

The fact that the proposal for the hike in water tariff has come right after the surge in power tariff has infuriated many Bengalureans.  

For the uninitiated, Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) on Wednesday announced a hike in power tariff by 40 paise per unit with an average increase of 5.4 percent against the Electrical Supply Companies (Escoms) demand for increase of 17.26 per cent in power tariff.
