Nepal again buying ineffective Chinese armoured troop carriers

In 2018, the Nepalese Army had received 63 APCs to be used for UN Peace Missions but they were found to be 'technically' ineffective to protect from rocket-propelled grenade attacks. 

Despite finding the previous procurement of armoured personnel carriers useless, the Nepalese Army has again forwarded a proposal to buy 48 APCs from China. 

Not only Nepal, but even the countries like Kenya, Algeria, Pakistan, Jordan, Myanmar and Bangladesh have also had complaints about China-made defence equipment. 

Currently, the Nepalese Army has expressed interest in buying fresh 48 APCs from China, along with ammunition, sources said.

The Army has also requested a four-week training on the armoured vehicles.

In 2014, it had also bought 47 armoured vehicles. As per the reports, these APCs have been stored at a Nepalese Army barrack.

In 2019, the Nepalese security and defence analysts had questioned the government for spending over Rs 3.747 billion and even demanded a probe

The experts feel that China wants to take the smaller nations into its grip so that it can expand its territory. 

"We have seen in the case of Pakistan. Islamabad now appears to have become a Chinese territory and there is no way that Islamabad can escape China's debt-trap system in near future," sources said.
