MiG-21 Bison fighter jet crashes in Barmer; pilot ejects safely

Synopsis

An inquiry has been ordered to find out why the aircraft crashed.

An Indian Air Force fighter aircraft MiG-21 Bison crashed in an open field in Rajasthan's Barmer district on Wednesday. The pilot is reported to be safe. 

An IAF official said that the MiG-21 Bison pilot ejected safely before the aircraft went down in the western sector.

The aircraft was on a training sortie.

An inquiry has been ordered to find out why the aircraft crashed.

This was the fourth crash so far this year. Earlier in May, Squadron Leader Abhinav Choudhary was killed after the MiG-21 Bison crashed in Punjab's Moga district. 

Prior to this, on March 17, a crash in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, claimed the life of Group Captain Ashish Gupta. 

In another crash in January at Rajasthan's Suratgarh, the pilot managed to eject safely.
