India to buy weapons worth Rs 13,165 crore, thrust on Make in India

According to the defence ministry, 87 per cent of the procurement worth Rs 11,486 crore will be from domestic sources.


The Defence Acquisition Council on Tuesday gave initial approval for acquisition proposals of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force to the tune of Rs 13,165 crore.

Key approvals have been accorded with regard to helicopters, guided munition and rocket ammunition to cater to the need of the armed forces.

Among the major procurements, 25 ALH Mark III helicopters will be bought at a cost of Rs 3,850 crore. 

Providing an impetus to Make in India, the Defence Acquisition Council approved the procurement of Terminally Guided Munition and HEPF/RHE Rocket Ammunition under the Buy category at a cost of Rs 4,962 crore.

Besides, the Defence Acquisition Council also gave its go-ahead to making amendments to the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2021 that would ensure further ease of doing business for the industry and increase efficiency.

The latest approvals are expected to meet the modernisation and operational requirements of the armed forces.

The Narendra Modi government has taken a number of measures to strengthen the Indian armed forces, including massively boosting the defence allocation in the budget over the years. From Rs 2.03 lakh crore in 2014, the defence allocation today stands at 4.78 lakh crore - a jump of over 131 per cent.

The government has also invested heavily in upgrading the infrastructure along the borders to ensure rapid deployment of forces when needed along with both Pakistan as well as China borders.
