As radiology plays a major role in diagnosis and monitoring efficacy of treatment in COVID-19 patients, this year the day is dedicated to the imaging professionals and their contribution in fighting against the pandemic.

Radiology is an integral part of the overall healthcare system. Without radiology, the doctors may not be able to confirm the diagnosis of several diseases.

Through the symptoms of the patients, his health history, and family history, the doctor may perform a preliminary diagnosis. The radiological imaging techniques help in confirmatory diagnosis.

Radiology/imaging techniques help in early diagnosis of certain diseases with rapid progressions, such as cancer.

Radiological techniques reduce the mortality in patients with cancer and other life-threatening conditions.

Dr Sudarshan Rawat is the Head of Department and Radiology consultant at the Manipal Hospitals, which is equipped with 3 digital X-ray machines and other ultra-modern radiology facilities that help the doctors in establishing an accurate diagnosis.

Dr Sudarshan says, "The diagnosis of X-rays has revolutionised the way of diagnosis and treatment. With the discovery of X-rays, a new branch of radiology came into exitence, which further advanced to digital X-ray, utrasound, CT scan, PET scan and MRI."

"Radiology has significantly increased the lifespan of people by diagnosing the disease in an early stage. Without any doubt, this is one of the most sought-after branches for specialisation in the field of medicine," he added.

Radiology/imaging techniques allow surgeons to perform complicated surgeries with high ease.

The real-time, high-resolution X-ray images during the surgery allow the doctor to evaluate the progress of surgery.

The techniques such as X-rays or ultrasound increases the safety of surgery.

Dr BYT Arya, Radiology consultant at the Manipal Hospitals, says: "Radiology techniques are a miracle for medical science. After 125 years of discovery, the X-rays are still one of the most widely used and less expensive radiology techniques."
