Educational qualifications
Kamala Harris studied in political science and economics at Howard University, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree. She then went to UC Hastings College of the Law, where she graduated in 1989 with a Juris Doctor.
She started her professional career as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She concentrated on serious crime cases here, especially those involving child abuse and sexual assault. Kamala Harris rose quickly to prominence in the legal field. She became the first woman and the first African American to be elected as San Francisco's district attorney in 2003.
She implemented a number of progressive changes during her time in office, such as a reentry program designed to lower recidivism and improve chances for convicts to reintegrate into society.
Harris became the first woman and person of color to be elected Attorney General of California in 2011. While facing criticism for her position on law enforcement tactics, Kamala Harris tackled important topics as AG, including consumer rights, marital equality, and environmental preservation.
