Tamil Nadu, Kerala brace for cyclone Burevi

Cyclone Burevi barrelled through Sri Lanka overnight, rattling the island nation but leaving it relatively unscathed on its way to the southern Indian coastline.

"There was rain and strong winds, but the cyclone did not cause any major damage in our area," Mangalanath Liyanarachchi, a local reporter in Trincomalee, told the Khaleej Times. Cyclone Burevi dumped as much as 279.8mm rain in Akkarayan, 260mm in Chavakachcheri, 245.1mm in Jaffna, 233.9mm in Kilinochchi and 224mm in Mullaithivu.

According to the India Meteorological Department, "Burevi over north Sri Lanka moved west­northwestwards with a speed of 11 kmph during past six hours and lay centered over north Sri Lanka and adjoining Gulf of Mannar. It is very likely to move west­northwestwards and emerge into Gulf of Mannar during next 3 hours."

"The Cyclonic Storm with wind speed of 70­80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph would be centered very close to Pamban around noon. It would then move nearly westsouthwestwards across Pamban area by afternoon and cross south Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Kanyakumari during December 3 night and December 4 early morning as a cyclonic storm with wind speed of 70­80 gusting to 90 kmph."

Burevi's impact on south Tamil Nadu coastal districts is likely to commence from December 3 forenoon initially over Ramanathapuram district and gradually towards Kanyakumari district.

15 NDRF teams have been deployed in Tamil Nadu while 8 teams are in Kerala. 12 flights from and to Chennai connecting Southern destinations like Thoothukudi, Trichy and Kochi have been cancelled due to Cyclone Burevi. As many as 3 flights from Chennai to Thoothukudi and 3 flights from Thoothukudi to Chennai also have been cancelled.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan last night during which the two leaders discussed the conditions prevailing due to Cyclone Burevi. The Prime Minister assured that Centre will provide all possible support to the states.
