Aircraft carrier INS Vikrant to be commissioned next year

Indian Navy's indigenously-built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, will be commissioned next year. Vice Admiral AK Chawla, Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, confirmed the report.   

The construction cost of the 40,000 tonne INS Vikrant is Rs 3,500 crore. The ship can carry up to 30 fighter aircraft and up to 10 helicopters. Sea trials will be held soon before commissioning.

Vikrant's basin trials were held at the Kochi Shipyard towards the end of last month. If things go as planned, the sea trials could take place later this month.

Construction is progressing with the goal of commissioning next year. Vikrant is designed to enable take-off and landing of various aircraft. It can also land about a dozen Rotary Wing aircraft, including the American MH-60R, Kamov K-31 and Sea King.
