In an indication that the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic may be worse than the first that swept across India, the country has reported 62,714 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours.Worryingly, the daily positivity rate has increased to 5.4 per cent.The country also had 312 deaths being reported due to Coronavirus.

The highest number of daily new cases are from seven states of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Punjab, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Maharashtra alone witnessed the highest Covid positivity rate of 22.78 per cent.The seven states account for 81.46% of the daily new cases in the last 24 hours.Health ministry data shows ten states displaying an upward trajectory in daily new cases.

India's total active caseload has reached 4,86,310 today, comprising 4.06 per cent of the total positive cases.According to the health ministry, 90 per cent of the Covid-19 deaths are in the category of those aged above 45 years.Out of this, over 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

On Saturday, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan met state health secretaries, municipal commissioners and district collectors of 46 districts most affected by the pandemic.The situation in the national capital is a cause of concern too. Delhi added 800 more Covid-19 containment zones in the last six days, taking the overall tally to 1,506.On Sunday, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain announced the tightening of Covid-19 protocols. These include restricting gatherings at weddings to a maximum of 50 per cent of the hall capacity.
