Maharashtra, Kerala pose big Covid worry; Centre rushes teams

India's fightback against Coronavirus continues to gain ground with both the daily new cases and daily deaths witnessing an 8-month low. However, two states -- Maharashtra and Kerala -- are a cause of concern.

According to the Union Health Ministry, at a time when almost all states and Union Territories are showing a declining trend in a number of cases and deaths, Maharashtra and Kerala continue to report a large number of cases.At present, these two states alone account for almost 70 per cent active Coronavirus cases in the country.

In the last 24 hours, Kerala reported the highest daily new cases at 3,459 followed by Maharashtra with 1,948 cases. Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (27) followed by Kerala (17).To tackle this situation, the Centre is rushing teams to both these states that will take stock of the on-ground situation and recommend necessary public health interventions to contain the large number of cases being reported there.

The central team to Maharashtra comprises of experts drawn from National Center for Disease Control and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi.The Kerala team shall comprise of senior officials from the Health Ministry along with experts from the regional office of Health & Family Welfare in Thiruvananthapuram and Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi.
