Coronavirus: India reports 50,040 COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours; recovery rate rises to 96.75%

India reports 50,040 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the country's case tally to 3,02,33,183.
 

India recorded 50,040 new cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the preceding 24 hours, the Union ministry of health and family welfare informed on Sunday in its daily bulletin -- a slight increase from its spike of 48,698 new cases a day ago.

The country's overall caseload now stands at 3.02 crore, while total fatalities are at 3.95 lakh, according to the health ministry.

Active cases have decreased by 9,162 in the last 24 hours to take the tally to 5.86 lakh.

Recoveries have been outnumbering the daily new cases for the 45th consecutive day now, with 57,944 people recovered today, taking the total number of recoveries to 2,92,51,029.

India's test positivity rate (positive cases identified for every 100 tests) continues to decline. For the 20th straight day it is below the 5%-mark at 2.82%.

The Union government is closely monitoring the Delta Plus variant cases being reported from several states. A study on the effectiveness of the existing Covid-19 vaccine against the Delta Plus variant is underway, said Dr Samiran Panda, Head of Epidemiology, ICMR, said on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the ICMR on Saturday said India has achieved the milestone of conducting 40 crore Covid-19 tests, with an average of more than 18 lakh tests per day in the month of June. India has tested 40,18,11,892 samples across the country till Friday, it said. The country tested 35 crore Covid-19 samples till June 1, 2021.
