Coronavirus: India logs 48,698 new COVID-19 cases, 5.7% lower than yesterday

There are 48 cases of the 'delta plus' variant across 11 states, the Health Ministry said Friday, insisting the spread is "very localised". Maximum cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra (20), with Tamil Nadu recording 9 and Madhya Pradesh 7.

India reported 48,698 new Covid-19 cases, taking the total tally to 3,01,83,143. With 1,183 new fatalities, the death toll stands at 3,94,493, according to data by union health ministry.

According to the data shared by the Union Health Ministry on Saturday, the country saw a total of 64,818 discharges in the last 24 hours, taking the total recovery to 2,91,93,085.

Additionally, in view of rapidly increasing Delta Plus variant cases in various states, the central government on Friday (June 25, 2021) ordered eight states and union territories in the nation to adopt immediate containment measures including preventing crowds, ramping up Covid-19 testing and vaccination drive in districts that have reported such cases.

In a letter addressed to the governments of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat and Haryana, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan stressed on implementing the containment measures on a priority basis.
