A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rain to coastal and Malnad Karnataka on August 23 and 24. Interior areas may get moderate showers, while rainfall activity is likely to ease after August 27.

Winds Reach 40 kmph Due to Low Pressure

A low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, currently located near the coasts of Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and Bangladesh. The system is expected to move towards the Kolkata coast on August 24, limiting its impact on South India. Winds around the system are currently reaching 40 kmph.

Heavy Rain Expected in Coastal and Malnad Karnataka

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast significant rainfall across parts of Karnataka between August 23 and 27. On August 23, coastal and Malnad regions, including Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu, are likely to receive heavy showers.

Light to Moderate Rain in Interior Karnataka

On August 24, heavy rainfall is expected to continue across coastal and Malnad areas. However, interior Karnataka is likely to receive only light to moderate showers. Overall rainfall activity is expected to decrease across the state after August 27.

Karnataka Likely to Receive Moderate Rain

The low-pressure system has triggered a cyclonic circulation with winds reaching up to 60 kmph. While the system is favourable for rainfall, it remains concentrated over Odisha and West Bengal. As a result, Karnataka is likely to receive moderate rainfall.

Dense Clouds Over Arabian Sea

Meanwhile, winds over the Arabian Sea are reaching around 60 kmph. A cyclonic circulation could develop near the Maldives, potentially leading to dense cloud formation in the region. Due to the disturbance over the Bay of Bengal, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until August 26.

Pacific Ocean Sees Intense Cyclonic Activity

The Pacific Ocean is also witnessing significant weather activity. Cyclone Lala is reportedly packing winds of around 130 kmph, while Saudel has intensified to around 230 kmph and is moving towards China. Two more systems, Mok with winds of 95 kmph and 18W with winds of 65 kmph, have also formed in the Pacific.

El Niño Adds to Karnataka's Rainfall Concerns

The ongoing El Niño effect has contributed to weaker rainfall conditions across parts of Karnataka. Instead of widespread flooding, several districts are experiencing drought-like conditions. Farmers are now hoping that the cyclonic circulation over Odisha will help bring more much-needed rainfall to the state.
