Severe winter in North India
Since late December, North India has been in a deep freeze. Chilly Himalayan winds are causing temperatures to drop in North and West India. Delhi has hovered around 4°C for days. Gurugram hit zero degrees, a 50-year low.
Meteorologists say this bone-chilling cold is due to a Western Disturbance. Cold north-westerly winds are hitting the plains, causing snowfall in the mountains and record-breaking cold in Delhi and Gurugram.

Reason for less cold in the mountains
In hilly areas, especially hill stations, cloudy skies prevent temperatures from dropping sharply. This creates a temperature gap, with plains getting colder while hill temperatures remain stable.
