Coronavirus: Spike of 83,809 cases pushes COVID-19 caseload over 49-lakh mark

The COVID-19 death toll in India reached 80,776 on Tuesday (September 15), with total number of cases going over 49 lakh.

India's COVID-19 case tally crossed the 49-lakh mark with a spike of 83,809 cases and 1,054 deaths in last 24 hours, according to Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total case tally stands at 49,30,237 in the country including 9,90,061 active cases, 38,59,400 cureddischargedmigrated and 80,776 deaths.

Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have reported the highest number of cases. However, infections are rising rapidly in states like Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Maharashtra which is most affected by the pandemic has 2,91,630 active cases of COVID-19. Karnataka has 98,482 active cases, Andhra Pradesh has 93,204, Tamil Nadu 46,912 and Delhi 28,641.

Even as India continues to have the second-highest number of coronavirus cases in the world, it has also become the country with the highest number of recovered cases.

India went past Brazil to have the highest number of COVID-19 recoveries globally, data from the US-based John Hopkins University showed.

India, as per the data, has seen 3,780,107 patients recover from the disease thus far. Brazil, meanwhile, has 3,723,206 recoveries, followed by the United States at 2,451,406.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 5,83,12,273 samples have been tested for COVID-19 up to 14th September, of these 10,72,845 were tested yesterday.
