IMD Warns of Prolonged Severe Heatwave Across Andhra Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department has issued a severe heatwave alert for several coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, warning that the scorching weather is likely to continue for at least the next four to five days. Districts such as East Godavari, Konaseema, Eluru, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore and Bapatla are expected to remain under severe heatwave conditions until May 25.

Northern coastal regions including Visakhapatnam, Kakinada and Anakapalle are also likely to experience extremely high temperatures. In the Rayalaseema region, temperatures are expected to hover between 41°C and 44°C over the coming days.

Weather officials have also indicated that there is currently no strong possibility of rain or thunderstorms, meaning residents may not get immediate relief from the blistering conditions.

Temperatures Cross 48°C as Multiple Districts Bake Under Extreme Heat

The heatwave has pushed temperatures to alarming levels across the state. Piduguralla in Palnadu district recorded 48.1°C, the highest temperature of the season so far in Andhra Pradesh.

Several other areas also witnessed extreme heat. Vetapalem and Nandiwada recorded 47.6°C, while Addanki and Thorragudipadu touched 47.4°C. Many districts including Bapatla, Amaravati, Ongole, Nellore and Kavali reported temperatures above 45°C.

According to state disaster management authorities, at least 18 districts have crossed the 45°C mark in recent days. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema continue to remain 2 to 3 degrees above normal seasonal temperatures, making this one of the harshest heat spells of the year.

Severe Heat in North Telangana

In Daryapur village of Navipet mandal in Nizamabad district, Rajeshwar (52) died due to heatstroke. In Jagityal district, Srinivas (40), a mason from Varshakonda village in Ibrahimpatnam mandal, and Karne Lachayya (85) from Morapalli village succumbed to the severe heat.

In Adilabad district, Jadhav Lathabai (54) from Borigaon in Neradigonda mandal, Aatram Ramu (44) from Kuchulapur in Talamadugu mandal, and Kova Kiran Kumar (27) from Ghanpur in Utnoor mandal also lost their lives.

In Peddapalli district, Ramineni Mallayya (75) from Odela and Abbas Khan (53) from Ramagundam also died due to the extreme heat.

Meanwhile, the death of eight-year-old Keerthana, daughter of Gaini Sanjeev and Kavitha from Naganpalli village in Kangti mandal of Sangareddy district, deeply shocked local residents.
