In what turned out to be a thrilling contest, former champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) put on a classy show, with the bat, to tame defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday. In Match 45 of the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, RR scripted the win by eight wickets.
Meanwhile, former champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) became the first team to be knocked out of the competition this season, as it was also their first instance of not qualifying for the playoffs. Nonetheless, we take a look at the records scripted in this tie.
Jofra Archer claims one of the most in powerplay: Archer managed to dismiss Quinton de Kock for mere six tonight during the powerplay, which was his only dismissal during the phase. Abu Dhabi's highest: MI played a brilliant innings of 1955 tonight, batting first. In the process, it became the highest first innings score this season at the venue, while the highest successful chase prior to tonight was 163.
Ankit Rajpoot scripts an unwanted one: RR pacer Ankit Rajpoot was pummeled for 60 runs tonight. Consequently, he became the second most expensive bowler in a match this season, after Siddarth Kaul (64).
Hardik Pandya scores some brilliant ones: Pandya played a blazing innings of a 21-ball unbeaten 60. He scored 52 runs in the final three overs, as he scored the second-most during the phase in the tournament's history, after Virat Kohli's 57 against Gujarat Lions (GL) in 2016. He also became the batsman to hit the most four-plus sixes in an IPL over (2), after Chris Gayle (5). He is also the second batsman to score more than 25 runs in an IPL over (3), after Gayle (7).
Sanju Samson hits the most: Samson's innings of an unbeaten 54 included three sixes. In the process, he has now hit the most sixes of the tournament (23), going past Nicholas Pooran (22).
Ben Stokes scripts a first: Stokes played a grand innings of an unbeaten 107. As a result, he has become the first batsman in the history of the competition to score two centuries while successfully chasing a total.
MI script an unwanted one: This was MI's highest unsuccessful defending total to date. The previous record for the same was 1947, which was chased down by Delhi Daredevils (DD) in 2018.
Match summary: Electing to bat, MI posted a challenging total of 1955, courtesy Pandya's brilliant unbeaten 60, while Ishan Kishan (37), Suryakumar Yadav (40) and Saurabh Tiwary (34), too, played their part. In reply, it was Stokes' unbeaten 107, along with Samson's unbeaten 54, that outlasted MI's bowling, as they won by eight wickets.
