MS Dhoni Team India mentor: Sunil Gavaskar happy, but warns of clash with head coach Ravi Shastri

Synopsis

MS Dhoni is back with Team India as its mentor for the ICC World T20 2021. While Sunil Gavaskar is happy for the same, he has warned that Dhoni should not clash with head coach Ravi Shastri.

Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni is creating headlines again after being roped in as the mentor of Team India for the ICC World T20 2021. It would be the first time Dhoni would be associated with Team India somehow, having announced his retirement last year.

Following the same announcement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday night, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his delight at the same. However, he has warned that Dhoni should not clash with head coach Ravi Shastri regarding team selection and tactics.

Speaking to Indian news channel Aaj Tak, Gavaskar recalled that it was under Dhoni that India won three ICC titles, including the WT20 in 2007, and his mentorship would aid India. He came up with his example when he was roped in as a consultant under then-head coach John Wright, and the latter believed that Gavaskar would take up his role.

However, he asserted that Shastri is aware that Dhoni is not interested in coaching. Thus, he feels that both should get along well, which would serve India massively. However, the only difference that could occur is the mismatch of opinions regarding team tactics and selection. Nevertheless, he asserted that the mere presence of Dhoni itself would be a massive boost for Team India, as he has tremendous experience in dealing with the side and known everything inside-out.

Also, Gavaskar was confused by the selection of veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav and is wondering if the latter would get a chance in the playing XI. Ashwin's last Twenty20 International for India was back in 2017.
