As the world celebrates International Women’s Day on Monday, the world of cricket is also doing the same. Women’s cricket has gained good recognition in the past few years and is all set to earn more attention in the coming years, with International Cricket Council expanding it.

The world is celebrating the women on Monday as a part of International Women’s Day. The sports world has already honoured the sportswomen across circuits, while cricket has been no different.

Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council has come up with some exciting news for women’s cricket. Post 2023, women’s cricket is all set to become even more competitive.

ICC has stated in a release that more teams are now set to be a part of the global events, like the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and the ICC Women’s World T20 from 2026. Furthermore, there would also be a separate tournament.

As of now, eight and ten teams take part in the CWC and WT20, respectively. However, 2029 CWC would witness ten teams participating, while from 2026, 12 teams would take part in the WT20.

Starting in 2027, a new tournament, ICC Women’s T20 Champions Cup, would be launched. The competition would involve six top sides, with 16 matches to be played.

Speaking on women’s cricket expansion, Manu Sawhney, ICC CEO, stated, “We have a clear focus and commitment to an ambitious long-term growth plan for the women’s game. We have been building momentum around the women’s game for the last four years investing in global broadcast coverage and marketing to drive fan engagement.”

“This decision to expand our women’s events builds on these foundations and allows us to give more member countries greater opportunities to compete on a global stage. This means that more teams will also get the opportunity to compete in the qualification pathways for the respective ICC events over the coming years. I am sure these initiatives will go a long way in helping us achieve our strategic goal of continuing to build strength and depth in the women’s game,” he concluded.
