Litterbugs in Bengaluru beware! ‘Charlies’ may make you pick up your garbage

The BBMP that was finding it difficult to deal with waste on streets has deployed 'Charlies’ who will not only issue challans on the spot to collect fines of Rs 500 but will also shame those who throw garbage in public by making them pick it up.

Next time you throw the garbage tied in plastic and litter on roads and by-lanes, you might be met with a surprise and may end up paying a fine and will also end up having to pick up the garbage that you dropped.

According to joint commissioner, Solid Waste Management, BBMP, Sarfaraz Khan, 'Charlies' a special team comprising of marshals and Health inspector will be on rounds. Whenever they come across such offenders, they will issue a challan and collect Rs 500 as fine.

"If people think they can spoil BBMP environment and get away with it, they will be taught a tough lesson. Not only fines, they will be made to pick up waste in public, " said Sarfaraz Khan.

So far, in the last few weeks, the palike has collected a whopping Rs 35 lakh as penalty from offenders and will intensify patrolling in the city.
