With more evidence coming out against tainted Keralite IPS officer Safeer Karim, who has been jailed after caught cheating in the UPSC mains exam last week, his entire career has now come under the scanner.
The police have acquired new information that Karim, who hails from Aluva, had used fraudulent methods to get through the UPSC preliminary examination as well. The development comes after the cops questioned the IPS officer's friends Samjad and Mohammed Shareeb, who were arrested on Saturday.
According to the investigation team, Samjad and Shareeb have confessed that they had dictated answers of the prelims to Karim over the phone, with the officer wearing a Bluetooth device inside the exam hall.
The police will now question the friends and close relatives of Karim again in an attempt to unearth more frauds which the accused has possibly committed, including details regarding his IPS tests.
The probe team, which did not rule out the possibility of more frauds involving Karim, would also examine whether the accused, who runs IAS coaching centres, has helped other candidates who appeared for UPSC exams.
Karim, who was on probation, was arrested for cheating while writing the UPSC mains exam at a test centre in Egmore, Chennai on October 30.
Intelligence Bureau officers caught Karim, who is an ASP in Tirunelveli, in the exam hall with a phone, a Bluetooth-enabled camera and wireless headphones, which he used to communicate with his wife Joicy Joy, who was in Hyderabad.
Joicy, who was also arrested and jailed for dictating answers to her husband, was recently granted bail as their one-year-old daughter Zia fell ill in jail.
