According to media reports, Kwek Yu Xuan weighed like a larger apple and was just 24 centimetres long when she was delivered.
In a piece of good news, Kwek Yu Xuan, who is believed to be the world's smallest baby, was sent home after 13 months of intensive treatment in Singapore's National University Hospital. The baby was born on June 9, 2020, and weighed only 212 grams.
According to media reports, Kwek Yu Xuan weighed like a larger apple and was just 24 centimetres long when she was delivered. Zhang Suhe, the nurse who wheeled Xuan into the neonatal intensive care post her delivery, stated that she could not believe her own eyes. She further said that she had never seen such a tiny newborn baby in her career span of 22 years as a nurse.
Xuan went through intensive treatment for months and weighed a much healthier 6.3 kgs. Last month, she was discharged from NUH and was believed to be the tiniest baby to have survived a premature birth.
Treating the newborn baby was also another challenge as her skin was too soft to allow probes, her body was too tiny for regular size breathing tubes. The hospital shared the success story on their official Facebook page and celebrated her courage. The post was captioned: "Our best wishes to Little Yu Xuan as she continues to grow, thrive and beat the odds every day."
