Will talk to Taliban but not recognise them: European Parliament

In its resolution, the European Parliament expressed apprehensions about the country becoming the safe sanctuary for the terrorists and terror activities, like it was 20 years back. 


Brussels: Expressing grave concern about the Taliban’s de facto government, the European Parliament said it will talk to the current dispensation for logistical, operational and humanitarian matters but will not recognise them.

It called for the European Union to invite Ahmad Massoud, the resistance leader of the Panjshir minority to a hearing in the Council and the European Parliament.

The resolution also insisted that the Taliban and the Government of the Islamic Republic must fulfil their counterterrorism commitments, including preventing al-Qaeda, Daesh or other terrorist groups and individuals from using Afghan soil to threaten or violate the security of any other country.

The resolution also recalled that Pakistan had provided safe havens to Talibans for many years and instructed the European External Action Service (EEAS) to convey to Pakistan’s leadership that it bears responsibility for security and stability in Afghanistan and that it must use its influence on the Taliban to achieve those aims, including representation of women and minorities in the government, free and fair conduct of elections, gender parity among others. 

The European Parliament further blamed the US for unilaterally taking decision to withdraw from Afghanistan and not consulting the NATO allies.
 
On formation of new government last week in Kabul, the Parliament expressed concern about the appointments in the all-male interim government consisting of 33 mullahs, with many under US and UN sanctions and wanted for terrorist activities.
