US: 2 police officers shot in Louisville protest over killing of Breonna Taylor

Two Louisville police officers were shot Wednesday night as protesters marched following news that only one of the three officers involved in Breonna Taylor's death was indicted on first-degree wanton endangerment charges.

Louisville (US): Two Louisville police officers were shot during demonstrations on Wednesday night, the police chief said, after a grand jury decided to not charge any officer in the killing of Breonna Taylor, instead indicting one former detective for recklessly firing into another apartment during the raid of Breonna Taylor’s home.

The other two officers who also fired shots during the botched March raid were not indicted, meaning no officer was charged with killing the 26-year-old Black emergency room technician and aspiring nurse.

Robert J Schroeder, the Louisville police chief, said at a brief news conference that a suspect was in custody and that neither of the officers’ injuries were life-threatening. One of the officers was alert and stable, and the other was in surgery, he said.

“I am very concerned about the safety of our officers,” Schroeder said. “Obviously, we’ve had two officers shot tonight, and that is very serious; it’s a very dangerous condition.”

Shortly before a 9 pm ET countywide curfew, there were reports of gunfire near one of the marches. Two of the responding officers were shot and had non-life-threatening wounds, Interim Schroeder told reporters. A suspect was in custody, he added.

Both officers were taken to the hospital. One officer is “alert and stable” and the other is in surgery, according to the interim police chief. Both are expected to recover.

US President Trump also tweeted about the shooting and prayed for the recovery of the two officers.

Protests were also underway in cities like Atlanta, New York, Philadelphia and Washington.
