Shahid Khaqan Abbasi elected as Pakistan's Interim Prime Minister

Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz has selected Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to be the interim prime minister of the country This comes after Nawaz Sharif's disqualification from the post of Prime Minister following the Panama Papers revelation Abbasi would be the Prime Minister for 45 days until Shahbaz Sharif contests the General Elections

After the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif from the post of Pakistan’s Prime Minister the ruling Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz has selected Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to be the interim prime minister of the country.

The decision was made by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during an informal consultative meeting of the party.

It was earlier reported that most PML-N leaders and members of Sharif family agreed on former defence minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif's name as the interim prime minister.

However, it is said that Abbasi was elected because he is considered an undisputed leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz.

Abbasi would serve as the chief executive of the country for 45 days. In the meantime, chief minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif would contest elections to make his way into the National Assembly.

After the victory in elections for the lower house of the parliament, Shahbaz Sharif would replace Abbasi to rule the country till next General Elections.

Shahbaz will forego his seat in the Punjab Assembly once he decides to fight the General Elections.
