An Indian living in Norway sparked a viral online debate by comparing the high cost of vegetables there to significantly lower prices in India. While highlighting expensive Norwegian groceries, his post raised a crucial question about whether Indian farmers receive fair compensation.

An Indian living in Norway has sparked a heated online conversation after sharing a striking comparison of vegetable prices in Norway and India. The post, shared by Vinod on X, highlighted the huge difference in what consumers pay for everyday produce in the two countries—and raised a bigger question about whether Indian farmers receive a fair share of the money paid by consumers.

In the video, Vinod showed grocery prices at a Norwegian store, including organic lemons priced at around Rs 850 per kg, tomatoes at Rs 680 per kg and a single cucumber costing approximately Rs 300.

Sharing the comparison on X, he wrote, “Even after living in Norway for years, it still surprises me every time I visit the butikk.”

He then listed the prices, writing, "These are the daily prices of groceries: Organic lemon: Rs 850/kg, tomato: Rs 680/kg, cucumber: Rs 300 each."

For comparison, Vinod said that in India's metropolitan cities, lemons can cost around Rs 90-Rs 110 per kg, tomatoes around Rs 60-Rs 80 per kg, and cucumbers approximately Rs 20-Rs 30 each, depending on quality.

The comparison, however, was not simply about the difference in grocery bills. Vinod pointed out that vegetables can be several times more expensive in Norway, while salaries are not necessarily eight times higher. He wrote, "Still, we complain as always."

He added, "It's not about Norway's cost structure, salaries, imports and so on... it just makes me wonder if we're paying our farmers a fair price, enough for their hard work in India."

He ended with a question that triggered the wider debate: "What do you think, fam? Are we failing our farmers in India?"

The post attracted contrasting reactions. One user argued that farmers do not receive a fair price while consumers in cities pay more, pointing to the role of middlemen. Another urged people to consider differences in per-capita income and income distribution before making direct comparisons between India and Norway.

Another commenter praised Vinod for raising the issue, arguing that India's comparatively low vegetable prices should also prompt questions about how much farmers earn from the final consumer price.

The viral comparison has therefore shifted the conversation from simply "India vs Norway vegetable prices" to a broader discussion about farmer incomes, food affordability, supply chains and the economics behind everyday groceries.
