Synopsis

At a UK-led meeting, India highlighted the human cost of the Iran conflict, stating it is the only nation to have lost mariners in attacks. India urged the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route, emphasizing the impact on its seafarers and energy security.

India has highlighted the human cost of the ongoing Iran conflict, stating that it is the “only country to have lost mariners” in attacks linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. The remark was made by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during a UK-led virtual meeting attended by over 60 countries to discuss reopening the critical maritime route.

At the high-level talks, India underscored the urgency of restoring normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy artery responsible for nearly a fifth of the world’s oil supply. The closure of the route has disrupted trade and triggered global concerns over rising fuel prices and supply shortages.

Misri emphasised that the crisis goes beyond geopolitics, pointing to the direct impact on Indian seafarers and energy security. He reiterated India’s long-standing position on ensuring “free and safe navigation” and unimpeded transit through international waters.

During the discussions, India also called for de-escalation and a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. Stressing dialogue as the only viable path forward, Misri noted that the situation requires all parties to return to negotiations to prevent further escalation.

The UK-hosted meeting brought together countries from across the globe to explore coordinated responses to the crisis, including diplomatic, economic, and potential security measures to reopen the Strait. The United States, however, was notably absent from the talks, even as tensions in the region continue to rise.

India’s participation reflects its strategic interest in maintaining stability in West Asia, given its heavy dependence on energy imports from the region. The disruption has already had ripple effects on global markets and shipping routes, further highlighting the urgency of restoring normalcy.

By spotlighting the loss of Indian mariners, New Delhi has drawn attention to the human toll of the conflict, reinforcing its call for immediate action to ensure maritime safety and prevent further casualties.
