Newly uncovered documents have revealed that Hamas tortured and executed its members over allegations of same-sex relationships, according to a report by the New York Post.  

The files, reportedly recovered by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), expose a "morality check" system used by the Iran-backed militant group to screen its recruits based on strict ideological standards. The documents list 94 Hamas members accused of various offences, including "homosexual conversations," "flirting with girls without a legal relationship," and "sodomy," grouping these with severe crimes such as child rape and torture.

Those deemed "unacceptable" were barred from serving in Hamas' intelligence, military, or interior ministry. The fate of many accused individuals remains unclear, but the reports highlight the brutal consequences of such accusations. Homosexuality is illegal in Gaza and can lead to imprisonment or execution, reported TOI.

A high-profile case mentioned in the documents details the 2016 execution of senior Hamas commander Mahmoud Ishtiwi. Accused of engaging in same-sex relationships, Ishtiwi endured nearly a year of torture before he was executed with three gunshots to the chest. Reports suggest he was subjected to extreme physical abuse, including being suspended by his limbs for prolonged periods.  

The revelations come amid ongoing investigations into Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. Israeli officials and survivors have provided further testimonies about atrocities committed during the assault, including reports that Hamas militants raped Israeli men both during the attack and in captivity.  

An Israeli source close to the Knesset told the New York Post that Hamas has not publicized these crimes in its propaganda efforts. "This would bring them much shame," the source explained, suggesting why such acts remain undisclosed by the group.
