  • He later told Varadkar that she must treat him well since she has a 'nice smile.'

A female journalist from Ireland had a bizarre moment with US President Donald Trump. She somehow found the spotlight on her when Trump called the newly elected Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar.

A troop of Irish journalists were present when the US President called his Irish counterpart to congratulate him on the victory. In the video footage of the conversation, Trump is heard saying, “We have a lot of your Irish press watching us right now.” It is at this point that he got distracted by a female journalist’s smile.

While still on the phone with Varadkar, Trump signalled to the reporter and said, “What is your name? come here, come here.” Members of the press corps were truly baffled as they watched the scene unfold. However, what happened next was nothing short of bizarre.

Trump said, “She has a nice smile on her face so I’m sure she treats you well.” Although the reporter, Caitriona Perry, a foreign correspondent for RTE, smiled and shrugged it off. She later tweeted about her encounter with Trump.

In her tweet, she said it was a bizarre moment. However, many on Twitter called their President out for being a “creep” and apologised on his behalf for what they perceived as objectification at workplace.

you handled this so well! so sorry you had to.

We apologize that our president is a weird, inappropriate creep.

It's hell to be objectified. When POTUS has no fear of doing that surrounded by cameras... I'm so sorry. Your success is more than a smile.

I am sorry our President treated you this way.
