In a shocking incident, a speeding car ran over people who were on their way to immerse a Durga idol in Chhattisgarh's Jashpur district on Friday.
The incident, which happened in Pathalgaon locality, injured over a dozen people. The number of deaths has not yet been confirmed by authorities. But media reports suggested that at least 4 people had lost their lives.
A video doing the rounds on social media showed the Madhya Pradesh registered Sports Utility Vehicle ramming through the procession at high speed and fleeing the spot. People in the procession were flung in the air due to the force of impact.
Angry locals set fire to several vehicles after the incident.
According to police officials, two occupants of the car -- identified as Bablu Vishwakarma (21) and Shishupal Sahu (26) -- are residents of Madhya Pradesh and have been arrested.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel mourned the loss of lives and that those who are involved will not be spared.
He further said that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
After the accident, some people chased down the car and accosted the occupants. They thrashed the suspects and handed them over to the police which had by then arrived on the spot.
Meanwhile, another video has surfaced which showed the vehicle in a ditch after it was allegedly deserted by the accused.
The video reportedly showed bags of suspected narcotics in the co-passenger side of the vehicle.

— Vinod Kapri (@vinodkapri)The incident, which sent shockwaves across the country, reminded many of the incident in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh where farmers were run over by a jeep that was part of the convoy of Union minister Ajay Mishra Teni's son Ashish Mishra. Ashish is currently behind bars as the prime accused in the case.
