The West Bengal government on Monday informed that the board examinations in the state for Classes 10 (Madhyamik) and 12 (Uchha Madhyamik) students have been cancelled in view of the Covid-19 situation. The state board exams were postponed so far.

The West Bengal board has cancelled both the class 10 Madhyamik and class 12 higher secondary exams, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced recently. The decision was taken after a committee that was set up by the government recommended cancelling the exams. The evaluation criteria will be released within the next seven days, added CM Banerjee.

Incidentally, on Sunday West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announced that the state government will form an expert committee to recommend whether secondary and higher secondary classes should be conducted as per an ANI report. In regard to the WBBSE Class 10 Class 12 Board Exam 2021, the state government also invited the opinions of the parents and the students. In a series of tweets, West Bengal CM said, "Our children's future is my greatest priority. To this regard, we have formed an expert committee to decide over holding the Class 10th and 12th board exams in 2021."  The West Bengal government invited opinions from students, parents and all other sections of the society till 2 pm today.

It is likely that the government will make a decision regarding the evaluation criteria after the CBSE, CISCE have announced their result preparation method. Banerjee has advised the state education minister Bratya Basu and the state board members to wait to announce the criteria within seven days as a delay might affect the future of the students.

Earlier, CM Banerjee had said that the Class 12 board exams would be conducted in the last week of July and Madhyamik or Class 10 board exams would be held in the second week of August.

Most of the state boards including both the central boards, CISCE and CBSE, have cancelled the Class 12 exams and have decided to assess students based on the internal marks.

Meanwhile, the Puducherry government has cancelled the class 12 board exams this year amid the Covid-19 pandemic, reported news agency ANI. However, the evaluation criteria is yet to be declared. This came after the CBSE exams were cancelled by the Centre last week considering the health and safety of students.

Apart from Puducherry, several states including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarat have also decided to follow the central government’s footstep in their decision regarding the cancellation of board exams.
