Uttarakhand flash flood: 10 bodies recovered; ITBP rescues all 16 people trapped in tunnel near Tapovan

Uttarakhand's Chamoli district witnessed a massive flood on Sunday prompting authorities to begin a search and rescue operation. While 10 bodies have been found following the events of the day, over 150 persons were said to be missing.

The mega flood in the Dhauli Ganga river occurred when a glacier burst in Joshimath in the district endangering the lives of the inhabitants along the banks of the river.

NTPC Limited who is incharge of the construction of the hydropower project confirmed the devastation of the project station.

“An avalanche near Tapovan in Uttarakhand has damaged a part of our under construction hydropower project in the region. While rescue operation is on, situation is being monitored continuously with the help of district administration and police,” tweeted NTPC Limited.

Meanwhile, ITBP rescued all 16 people who were trapped in the tunnel near Tapovan, Chamoli.

Meanwhile, CM Trivendra Singh Rawat said, “Medical teams have been rushed to the affected site. 30 bed hospital has been kept ready at Joshimath for dealing with this emergency. Hospitals in Srinagar, Rishikesh, Jollygrant and Dehradun are on standby. We are doing our best to deal with this disaster.”

PM Modi reviewed the situation and said relief operations underway.

Meanwhile, President Kovind also prayed for the safety of those stuck in the mayhem.
