Stalin enlists Nobel laureate, former RBI governor and ex-chief economist at PMO as his advisers

Governor Banwarilal Purohit informed that based on the recommendation of the council, the government will revitalise the state's economy and ensure that benefits of economic growth reach all segments of society.


The Tamil Nadu government will constitute an economic advisory council that will assist Chief Minister MK Stalin in making policy decisions.

This revelation was made by Governor Banwarilal Purohit during his address to the state legislative assembly.

The Governor announced that the council would comprise former Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan, former chief economic advisor to the Prime Minister's Office Dr Arvind Subramanian, former Union finance secretary Dr S Narayan, Nobel laureate Esther Duflo of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and development economist Jean Dreze.

The Governor said that based on the council would be tasked with giving recommendations that enable the chief minister to ensure last-mile delivery of welfare policies.

The Governor told the members of the 16th legislative assembly that the Stalin government would focus on improving the state's fiscal position and bringing down its overall debt burden. 

The Governor said that based on the recommendation of the council, the government will revitalise the state's economy and ensure that benefits of economic growth reach all segments of society.

As a first step, a report detailing the true state of Tamil Nadu's finances will be released in the month of July.
