Gilead Sciences, the biopharmaceutical company that developed the anti-viral medication Remdesivir, has announced that it will donate 4.5 lakh vials of the drug to the Indian government to meet its needs.

Remdesivir, which certain studies have shown prevents the Covid virus from multiplicating, has been authorised for temporary use as a Covid-19 treatment in 50 countries. In the United States, Remdesivir is available under the brand name Veklury. In India, Remdesivir is approved for restricted emergency use for the treatment of suspected or laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 in adults and children hospitalised with severe disease.
Gilead Sciences, in a statement, said that all seven of its licensed manufacturers in India had been told to scale up their production capabilities to increase the availability of the drug.
Johanna Mercier, Chief Commercial Officer of Gilead Sciences, said that the recent surge of Covid cases in India had created unprecedented pressure on health systems.
"We will do our part to help tackle this crisis. Our immediate focus is to quickly address the needs of patients in India who may benefit from Remdesivir by working together with the government, health authorities and our voluntary licensees," she said.
