Here's what you should know

* Project 17A frigate is a design derivative of the Shivalik class stealth frigate with much more advanced stealth features and indigenous weapons and sensors. These frigates are being built using integrated construction methodology. 

* The P17A frigate incorporate new design concepts for improved survivability, sea keeping, stealth and ship manoeuvrability.

* Seven frigates under P17A series are to be constructed out of which four are being constructed in Mazagon Docks Limited and three in GRSE. 

* The P17A class frigates are being built using indigenously developed steel and fitted with weapons and sensors along with Integrated Platform Management System. 

* The P17A ships will be equipped with BrahMos SSM, LRSAM systems (Forward & Aft configuration) with MF STAR radar, indigenous sonar, and triple tube heavy torpedo launcher.

* Each of these ships will have a load displacement of 6,670 tonnes. The project was cleared by the Narendra Modi government during its first term in 2015. It involves the building of seven stealth frigates at an estimated cost of Rs 50,000 crore.
