Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday elaborated India's vision and efforts to overcome climate change at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference, wherein he urged the world leaders to make adaptation the key component of development policies and projects. During his around three-minute speech at the COP26, the Prime Minister shared his three views on the pressing issue that the globe is facing.
Talking about adaptation, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s experience and said that in India, various government projects like 'Tapwater for All', 'Clean India Mission' and 'Clean Cooking Fuel' were not only improving the quality of life of the citizens but also provided then adaptation benefits.
He also vowed to give focus to traditional practices. Stating that many traditional communities had the knowledge to live in harmony with nature, Prime Minister Modi said that traditional practices deserve to get appropriate attention in adaptation policies.
Stating that preservation of lifestyle as per local conditions can be an important pillar of adaptation, the Prime Minister sought that this knowledge is passed onto the younger generations and that this must be made a part of the school syllabi.
Prime Minister Modi further emphasised the importance of global support for vulnerable countries even if the methods of adaptation are local. He recalled the initiative India took with regard to the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure."
Asserting that adaptation had not received the kind of importance in the global climate debate that mitigation has, the Prime Minister said that was an injustice of sorts to developing countries that are more adversely impacted by climate change.
Earlier, United States President Joe Biden said that not only was his country not back at the table, but it was also leading by example and wanted to offer assistance to developing nations in accelerating their transition to clean energy. While opening the global climate summit, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the world was strapped to a doomsday device.
