PM Modi, President Kovind lead country in paying tributes to Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary

A statesman and saffron stalwart, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first BJP Prime Minister and had held the post for three terms in 1996, 1998-99 and from 1999-2004.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind led the country in paying homage to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary.

Along with the PM and President, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP national president JP Nadda along with others paid floral tributes at the ‘Sadaiv Atal’ memorial to Vajpayee in Delhi.

A statesman and saffron stalwart, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first BJP Prime Minister and had held the post for three terms in 1996, 1998-99 and from 1999-2004. He passed away on August 16, 2018, at the age of 93 after suffering from prolonged illness.

The Modi government in 2014 declared that Vajpayee's birth anniversary, 25 December, would be marked as Good Governance Day. Vajpayee was conferred India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2015 by the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.

Meanwhile, leaders from across parties took to Twitter to pay homage to Atal Bihari Vajpayee. 

Prominent writer and an efficient leader, Vajpayee founded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on April 6, 1980 after the dissolution of Jan Sangh. He served as the first president of BJP.
