PM Modi departs for Italy-UK visit; to meet Pope, show the world India's climate action

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emplaned for Italy and the United Kingdom to participate in the G20 Summit and 26th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed for Italy and the United Kingdom to participate in the G20 Summit and 26th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Before leaving, Prime Minister Modi said that he will be visiting Rome, Italy and the Vatican City, from October 29-31, at the invitation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi, following which he will travel to Glasgow, the United Kingdom from November 1-2 at the invitation of his British counterpart Boris Johnson.

Italy is the host country for the 16th edition of the G20 Leaders' Summit, wherein the heads of the member states will discuss the global economic and health recovery from the pandemic, sustainable development, and climate change. 

In his departure statement, the Prime Minister noted that this will be the first in-person summit of the G20 since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. He said that the summit will allow world leaders to take stock of the current global situation and exchange ideas on how the G20 can be an engine for building back inclusively and sustainably from the pandemic and strengthening economic resilience.

During his stay, he will also visit the Vatican City where he will call on Pope Francis and also meet Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, the Prime Minister will also meet with leaders of other partner countries and review the progress in India’s bilateral relations with them. On October 31, the Prime Minister will emplane for the UK to attend the COP-26 meeting in Glasgow.

Prime Minister Modi will be taking part in the high-level segment of COP-26 titled ‘world leaders’ summit' on November 1-2 along with 120 Heads of States and governments from around the world.

Taking about the energy sector, the Prime Minister noted that India is taking ambitious action on expanding clean and renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation and bio-diversity. Prime Minister Modi further said that he will highlight the measures India has taken for climate action and achievements. 

While attending the world leaders' summit, the Prime Minister will highlight the need to comprehensively address climate change issues including equitable distribution of carbon space, mobilization of finance, technology transfer, support for mitigation and adaptation and resilience-building measures and the importance of sustainable lifestyles for green and inclusive growth.
