PM Modi, Biden speak over phone; agree to have efficient supply chains of vaccine raw materials

The conversation came hours after the United States reversed its earlier stand on supplying raw materials meant for manufacturing of vaccines, and assured New Delhi that it will immediately rush medical aid to the Covid-hit nation.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone conversation with US President Joe Biden where the two leaders discussed the prevailing Covid-19 situation in both countries. 

The conversation came hours after the United States reversed its earlier stand on supplying raw materials meant for manufacturing of vaccines, and assured New Delhi that it will immediately rush medical aid to the Covid-hit nation.

After the conversation with Biden, the Prime Minister tweeted: "Had a fruitful conversation with US President Joe Biden today. We discussed the evolving Covid situation in both countries in detail. I thanked President Biden for the support being provided by the United States to India."

"My discussion with Biden also underscored the importance of smooth and efficient supply chains of vaccine raw materials and medicines. India-US healthcare partnership can address the global challenge of Covid-19," he added.

Both countries pledged to work closely together in the fight against Covid-19.

During the phone conversation, President Biden pledged "America's steadfast support for the people of India who have been impacted by the recent surge in Coid-19 cases." 

The United States has announced that it will immediately provide a range of emergency assistance, including oxygen-related supplies, vaccine materials, and therapeutics. 

Prime Minister Modi appreciated the strong cooperation between both countries. The two leaders resolved that the United States and India will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the effort to protect citizens.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India's commitment to contain the Covid-19 pandemic globally through Vaccine Maitri, and its participation in Covax and the Quad Vaccine Initiatives.
