NIA takes over Shaurya Chakra awardee's murder case

Synopsis

Shaurya Chakra awardee Comrade Balwinder Singh Sandhu's assassination on October 16 last year at the residence-cum-school run by him in Bhikiwind in Punjab's TarnTaran district had sent shockwaves across the country.

The National Investigation Agency has taken up the investigation into the killing of Shaurya Chakra awardee Comrade Balwinder Singh Sandhu.

Sandhu's assassination on October 16 last year at the residence-cum-school run by him in Bhikiwind in Punjab's TarnTaran district had sent shockwaves across the country.

The Punjab Police, which had been investigating the case earlier, found that the killing was executed under a conspiracy hatched by Pakistan-based Khalistani terrorist Lakhvir Singh Rode and his handlers in Pakistani's Inter Services Intelligence.

Considering the gravity of the offence and its international ramifications, the Union Home Ministry handed the case over to the NIA.

Sandhu had been on the radar of Khalistani terrorists for nearly 2 decades.

During the peak of terrorism in Punjab, Comrade Balwinder Singh and his family had fearlessly fought terrorists. He was awarded the Shaurya Chakra in 1993. Besides Sandhu and his wife Jagdish Kaur, his elder brother Rajit and his wife Balraj Kaur had also received the Shaurya Chakra.
