Narendra Modi government now has a Ministry of Co-operation

Synopsis

The ministry, aimed at realizing the vision of 'Sahkar se Samriddhi', will provide a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country.

In a landmark move, the Narendra Modi government now has a separate 'Ministry of Co-operation', thus fulfilling the budget announcement made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The ministry, aimed at realizing the vision of 'Sahkar se Samriddhi', will provide a separate administrative, policy and legal framework to strengthen the co-operative movement in the country.

In a statement, the government said that the new ministry would help deepen co-operatives as a true people-based movement reaching up to the grassroots.

In a country where a cooperative-based economic development model is very relevant, the ministry will work to streamline the process of ease of doing business for co-operatives and enable the development of multi-state co-operatives.
