Mizoram blames Assam for 'intrusion and aggression' that claimed lives of 6 policemen

Mizoram government has blamed the Assam Police for the aggression along the border between the two states that resulted in the loss of lives of six Assam Police personnel and injuries to many civilians.


Mizoram government on Monday blamed the Assam Police for the aggression along the border between the two states that resulted in the loss of lives of six Assam Police personnel and injuries to many civilians.

"The Government of Mizoram strongly condemns the unjustified act of the Assam government in this intrusion and aggression into Mizoram's territory. Mizoram deeply regrets the needless and avoidable injuries on both sides," the statement said.

The Mizoram government claimed that around 200 armed police led by Assam Police Inspector General and Cachar district officials arrived at the Vairengte autorickshaw stand in Kolasib district at around 11:30 am and forcibly crossed the duty post manned by CRPF personnel stationed there and overran a duty post manned by a section of Mizoram police personnel. 

The Assam Police also damaged several vehicles that were travelling along the National Highway between Vairengte and Lailapur, the Mizoram government claimed.

The statement further claimed that Assam Police are lathi-charged and fired teargas shells at unarmed residents who came to the spot after learning about the arson.  

Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana said that the Assam side was adamant when Kolasib district officials went to negotiate with them. 

The state Home Minister Lalchamliana said that around 4:50 pm, a volley of tear gas canisters and grenades were launched at Mizoram Police, followed by firing from Assam side. This forced Mizoram Police to respond spontaneously by fire back.

Stating that Mizoram desired that the inter-state border issue with Assam be resolved in an atmosphere of peace and understanding, the Home Minister Lalchamliana called upon the Assam government to create an environment for peaceful resolution of the dispute.
