Madhya Pradesh announces lockdown in all urban areas from Friday 6 pm to Monday 6 am

The weekend-long curfew comes as fresh infections continue to explode. Madhya Pradesh yesterday reported 4,043 new coronavirus cases.


Bhopal: All urban areas of Madhya Pradesh will go into a lockdown from 6 pm tomorrow to 6 am on Monday in a move to control the steep surge in coronavirus cases in the state.

“In the wake of Covid-19 situation, there will be a lockdown from 6pm on Friday to 6am on Monday in all urban areas of Madhya Pradesh. For cities where cases have increased, appropriate action will be taken after a meeting of the crisis management group. We’re making containment areas in big cities,” Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Chouhan announced a slew of restrictions after a review meeting on Wednesday — when the state’s daily Covid count crossed 4,000 for the first time. It’s been a new high every day for the past week. State government offices will operate only five days a week for the next three months.

Shajapur went into a twoday lockdown from 8pm on Wednesday and Chhindwara district will go into a weeklong lockdown from 8pm on Thursday.

In the last few days, the Madhya Pradesh government has announced several measures to curb the spread of the pandemic, including suspending bus services with the neighbouring state of Chhattisgarh till April 15.

The weekend-long curfew comes as fresh infections continue to explode. Madhya Pradesh yesterday reported 4,043 new coronavirus cases, taking the infections tally in the state to 3,18,014. With 13 more fatalities, the death toll has climbed to 4,086, the state health department said.

A total of 2,126 patients were discharged in the state in the past 24 hours, taking the recovery count in Madhya Pradesh to 2,87,869.

Indore and Bhopal - the biggest cities in the state - continue to record the highest daily spike in cases.
